How do you replace a legend?
I’m sure you’ve heard from people who thought Duke should have gone after someone with some experience to replace Mike Krzyzewski, someone with gravitas. Maybe Johnny Dawkins or Tommy Amaker or Quin Snyder. Or maybe Duke should have stepped out of the “family.” Is Tony Bennett really happy in Charlottesville? Wouldn’t Brad Stevens like to leave the NBA behind?
Instead Duke opted for a gangly, bespectacled then 34-year old who looks like your high school chemistry teacher and has never been a head coach at any level.
But Duke basketball history, indeed ACC basketball history, has been written by coaches who didn’t wait until middle age to start winning championships. It turns out that Jon Scheyer might be in a chronological sweet spot.
