The 37-year-old Brewer is Duke’s new offensive coordinator. He shared that role last season at SMU, when they still were in the AAC.
Brewer was offensive quality control coach under Manny Diaz at Miami in 2020 and 2021 before becoming quarterback coach at SMU in 2022, a role that he reprised last season.
For the 2023 season SMU averaged 38.7 points per game, eighth in the NCAA FBS sub-division. They were 22nd in passing yards per game and had the nation’s 30th fastest offense; Duke’s offense was 89th in tempo. They defeated Tulane 26-14 in the AAC title game. SMU scored 55 or more points four times last season, including a 69-10 win over Tulsa and a 59-14 win over Navy.
