I’m going to put on my historian’s hat for a few days, inspired of course by the upcoming Duke-North Carolina matchup. But also inspired by a phone interview last week with the Chronicle’s Rachael Kaplan, who interviewed me for a look at that esteemed rivalry.
But the interview focused on Duke-Carolina games before Mike Krzyzewski showed up in Durham. Which got me thinking about great Duke wins in the rivalry up to Bill Foster’s departure at the end of the 1980 season.
So, a two-parter, focusing on great Duke wins over this span, a Baker’s dozen.
And I’m going to go with chronological order.
February 2, 1929.
Duke--Trinity College, actually--got a five-year head start on UNC. But Duke didn’t prioritize athletics in the 1920s and UNC did. Duke lost 16 straight basketball games to UNC, some close, some by scores like 44-12 or 55-19. But by the end of the decade Duke had hired Wallace Wade to coach football, Eddie Cameron to coach basketball and had joined the Southern Conference.
