Jon Scheyer played in four ACC-Big Ten Challenges. Duke won his first three seasons, against Indiana, Wisconsin and Purdue, losing at Wisconsin his senior year. His first Duke team beat Ohio State last year to end Duke’s record in the event to 20 wins and four losses.
Not too shabby.
But that’s ancient history. The new kid in town is the ACC/SEC Challenge.
Full disclosure. I’m an if-it-ain’t-broke-don’t-fix-it-kind of guy.
What was broke?
I asked Scheyer if the event had gotten stale and needed to be replaced.
He split the difference.
“I don’t know if it was getting stale. The games we've been a part of have been electric environments and some big-time games. But it's just the world we're in right now. And to me, it just feels like the right timing. TV has a lot to do with this and the SEC is a great league and the ACC has a great league and historically has always had. So for the two of us to be together, I think it's great. Anytime you can do something that's new or different--we haven’t played at Arkansas-- that’s a cool thing for fans, them and us and it will be like that every year.”
TV had a role in all this? Who’d a thunk it?
So, instead of Duke going to Illinois or Ohio State, Duke is going to Arkansas.
