Is Dariq Whitehead the answer?
Well, I suppose we need a question first. I think we have several.
After 14 games Duke has two players scoring in double figures, Kyle Filipowski at 13.8 points per game, Jeremy Roach at 12.5. Mark Mitchell is knocking on the door at 9.7.
For the record, since ACC play began in 1953-’54, Duke has had only two double-figure scorers three times, 1962, 1982 and 2006. Art Heyman and Jeff Mullins combined for 46 points per game in 1962, J.J. Redick and Shelden Williams combined for 45 in 2006. Both were pretty good teams.
Vince Taylor and Chip Engelland combined for 35 points per game in 1982. That team wasn’t very good.
The 2021 team only qualifies if we count Jalen Johnson as the third double-figure scorer after Matthew Hurt and D.J. Steward. Johnson played in 13 of Duke’s 24 games in that strange, truncated season that I’ve sort of convinced myself didn’t really happen.
And Duke hasn’t had a team with a leading scorer under 14 points per game since 1960.
