Part one of a two-part look at how first-year Duke coaches handled their first tournament action.
New, young coach meets the oldest major-college conference-tournament for the first time.
Jon Scheyer is 35 years old. The Atlantic Coast Conference is twice that age. The first ACC Tournament was contested in 1954. And the tournament’s roots were in the still-active Southern Conference Tournament, which dates back to the Harding Administration.
Scheyer is about to become only the sixth Duke coach to coach in the ACC Tournament in his first season. That's not a lot but that's what happens when one coach holds the reins for 43 years.
Duke has won 21 ACC Tournaments, more than any other school. So, it's a bit of a surprise to find out that Duke's first-year coaches haven't done all that well. In fact four of Scheyer's five predecessors didn't win a single tournament game in their maiden season.
